What has to match
Species, grade, board width, thickness and cut all affect how a repair or extension looks.
- Species (red oak and white oak differ in color and stain absorption)
- Board width and thickness
- Grade (amount of knots and color variation)
- Finish and sheen
Weaving versus a seam
Weaving staggers new boards into old so there is no straight line across the room. A threshold or seam is simpler but more noticeable.
Why finishing together matters
Aged wood and finish change color over time. Sanding old and new areas together and applying one finish gives the closest match. Even then, an exact match is not guaranteed.
Frequently asked questions
Can prefinished boards match my site-finished floor?
Usually not closely. Factory finishes and micro-bevels look different from site-applied finish.
