Service
Carpet-to-Hardwood Replacement
Removing carpet and either restoring hardwood found underneath or installing new hardwood in its place.
Some carpeted rooms hide original hardwood. Whether it can be restored depends on its condition: staple holes, tack strip damage, stains and patches are common.
Where no usable hardwood exists, new solid or engineered flooring is installed, sometimes woven into adjoining rooms.
Also known as: replace carpet with hardwood, carpet removal and hardwood, hardwood under carpet.
Typical scope
- Carpet, pad, staple and tack strip removal
- Assessment of any hardwood underneath
- Repair and refinish, or new installation
- Height transitions to adjoining floors
Usually not included
- Staircase work is not part of this service. You can flag it as a separate related request.
- Structural subfloor or joist repair, moisture remediation and pest damage repair are outside a flooring quote unless the contractor says otherwise.
- Carpet disposal fees may be quoted separately.
Material and condition considerations
- Hardwood under carpet may have holes along walls from tack strips that need filling or board replacement.
- Floor height changes can affect doors and transitions.
- Pet stains under carpet can go through the wood and may need board replacement.
What affects the price
No prices are published here. Independent contractors quote after seeing the floor. These factors usually drive the quote:

How to prepare

Frequently asked questions
Is the hardwood under my carpet usable?
It might be. A contractor needs to see it after the carpet is lifted. Damage from tack strips, staples and pet stains is common but often repairable.
