Service
Hardwood Floor Extension and Matching
Extending an existing hardwood floor into another room or a renovated area, weaving new boards into old so the floor reads as continuous.
Extending a floor usually means sourcing the same species, grade and board width, then weaving new boards into the existing floor instead of ending at a straight seam.
A true color match normally requires sanding and finishing old and new areas together. Prefinished additions next to aged site-finished floors rarely match.
Also known as: weave in hardwood, match existing hardwood, extend hardwood into another room, lace in flooring.
Typical scope
- Identifying species, width and thickness
- Removing boards at the junction and weaving in new ones
- Sanding and finishing the combined area
Usually not included
- Staircase work is not part of this service. You can flag it as a separate related request.
- Structural subfloor or joist repair, moisture remediation and pest damage repair are outside a flooring quote unless the contractor says otherwise.
Material and condition considerations
- Older floors may use widths or thicknesses no longer stocked, requiring custom milling or salvage.
- Different species, like red and white oak, take stain differently.
- New wood can change color with light exposure over time.
What affects the price
No prices are published here. Independent contractors quote after seeing the floor. These factors usually drive the quote:
- Availability of matching material
- Length of the weave-in junction
- Size of the new area
- Sanding and finishing the combined floor
How to prepare
- Share measurements and photos of the existing floor and the area to extend.
- Find a spare or removable board to help identify species and width.

Frequently asked questions
Can new hardwood match my existing floor exactly?
It can get close, especially when the old and new areas are sanded and finished together. Exact matches are not guaranteed because aged wood changes color.
