Hardwood Floor Repair

Replacing or securing damaged boards, filling gaps and correcting localized problems so the floor can be finished or used normally.

Repair covers localized problems: cupped or stained boards, pet damage, cracked boards, loose or squeaky areas and patches left after a wall or vent was moved.

Repairs on a finished floor usually need to be blended with refinishing or recoating to look consistent. A repair alone may remain visible.

Also known as: board replacement, hardwood patching, squeaky floor repair, water damaged hardwood.

Typical scope

  • Cutting out and weaving in replacement boards
  • Securing loose or squeaky boards where accessible
  • Patching floor vents, removed walls or transitions
  • Matching species and board width where available

Usually not included

  • Staircase work is not part of this service. You can flag it as a separate related request.
  • Structural subfloor or joist repair, moisture remediation and pest damage repair are outside a flooring quote unless the contractor says otherwise.
  • Finding and fixing the source of water damage is a separate trade.

Material and condition considerations

  • Cupping or crowning often points to moisture. The moisture source should be addressed before boards are replaced.
  • Older floors may use board widths or species that are hard to source new. Salvaged boards from closets are sometimes used.
  • Repaired areas usually show until the whole room is sanded and finished together.

What affects the price

No prices are published here. Independent contractors quote after seeing the floor. These factors usually drive the quote:

  • Number and location of damaged boards
  • Availability of matching species, grade and width
  • Whether refinishing follows the repair
  • Subfloor condition found once boards are removed

How to prepare

  • Photograph the damage and note when it appeared.
  • Note any leaks, plumbing work or pet accidents nearby.
  • Clear the immediate area and nearby furniture.

How the estimate and referral work

  1. You send the project details below. Nothing is shared publicly.
  2. We check the address is inside current coverage, then share your request with a relevant independent flooring contractor.

We cannot promise a contractor is available for every request or date. More on how it works.

Frequently asked questions

Will repaired boards match the rest of the floor?

New wood rarely matches aged, finished wood exactly. Matching is closest when the repair is followed by sanding and finishing the whole room.

Should I repair boards before refinishing?

Yes, usually. Repairs are done first so the patched area is sanded and finished with the rest of the floor.
